Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Bicycle touring journals
July 21 Thursday Bicycle touring from Medicine Hat Alberta -Medicine Hat Alberta
The sandflies swarm our camp. I hate when they fly up my nose. We jump on our bikes to get away from the nasty brutes and cruise the bike trails. We try the ice cream at a park where they rent paddle boats. The whole morning we are on the trails, I only see two other people using the bike trails. Medicine Hat has some really good paths through the valleys. Lots of large trees. Heritage money from the province of Alberta was used to pay for the trails. They wind their way along the river and through a number of parks.
It is a blistering 36ยบ C today and that is before it reflects off the asphalt. I bet we could fry the proverbial egg on the sidewalk in no time flat today. We elect to take in a movie matinee just to get out of the heat and into an air conditioned place. I start out watching Disney's Lion King, but when the animals begin to sing I politely excuse myself and wander into another theatre.
We eat at Dairy Queen, mainly ice cream and milkshakes, then Susan and I go to a Pioneer League ball game with the Medicine Hat Blue Jays playing the team from Helena Montana which is the farm team for Milwaukee. Nothing like taking in a ball game with hot dogs and cold pop, while lying back and frying in the broiling sun. Sharon, with better sense than the two of us, goes back to camp to read and wait for Vicky to arrive.
By the time the ball game finishes, Susan and I have to ride back to camp in semi-darkness. We arrive just as Sharon and Vicky are returning from DQ. Doh!
